🫖 Brewing Method:

For oolong tea, especially this high-quality kind, I highly recommend using a teapot or gaiwan to really savor it. If you don’t have the time or tools, using a filter cup is fine, but make sure to brew it in multiple short infusions. Oolong tea is semi-fermented, so slightly higher water temperatures are fine, but be sure to control the brewing time. The color of the tea soup will help you judge, and the first brew can be a bit longer. Usually, 3-4 brews is about right.

As someone who has been a tea lover for many years, I’ve tried a fair amount of oolong tea. While I don’t drink oolong all the time, I always keep some Taiwanese oolong and Da Hong Pao at home for variety. I was really impressed when I opened this set. The tea leaves are of high quality, and after brewing, the tea is clear and bright. With each infusion, the taste evolves, offering a layered and rich experience.

I tried Zhangping Shui Xian for the first time, and I learned that it's the only pressed oolong in the set. It has a unique floral fragrance, just like its name, and the taste is smooth with a nice aftertaste.

I also noticed that iTeaworld has a pretty full range of teas. Besides oolong, they offer green tea, black tea, white tea, and Pu-erh, among others. I usually drink jasmine and Pu-erh, so I’m planning to try their other teas next time. The quality is definitely impressive!

Phoenix Dan Cong
Origin: Chaozhou, Guangdong
Fermentation: Medium
Known as the "perfume of teas." The dry leaves are dark with reddish tips, and the brewed tea yields a bright amber color.
The aroma is intense, with floral and honey notes. The taste? A slightly woody, floral flavor that lingers beautifully.
Can be steeped 3-4 times.
Da Hong Pao
Origin: Wuyi Mountains, Fujian
Fermentation: Heavy
My personal favorite! The dry leaves are dark, and the tea liquor is a rich, clear reddish-orange.
It has a deep caramel flavor with a subtle hint of orchid, creating a full-bodied, robust taste. Pair it with sweets, and you’re in heaven!
Can be steeped 4-5 times—super durable!
Tie Guan Yin
Origin: Xiping Town, Anxi, Fujian
Fermentation: Light
A popular oolong, perfect for those who prefer a lighter, more floral tea. The dry leaves are deep green, thick, and tightly rolled. The liquor is a yellowish-green.
The flavor is delicate and fresh, with a faint orchid fragrance.
Can be steeped 3-4 times. Just don’t steep it too long, or it’ll get bitter.
Zhangping Shui Xian
Origin: Zhangping, Longyan, Fujian
Fermentation: Medium
This was my first time trying Zhangping Shui Xian, and wow, it blew me away!
The dry tea comes in compact square cakes—the only compressed tea in the oolong category. The leaves are a mix of green, yellow, and red, and the liquor is a clear yellow.
The taste is refreshingly floral with fruity undertones, and it leaves a sweet aftertaste.
Can be steeped 4-5 times.
Final Thoughts

Tieguanyin: Wet leaves smelled like orchid and cooked spinach, the tea is vegetal, sweet, and clean. It is a very green oolong and the buttery sweetness of it really lingers. Hydrated leaves are 1.5 - 2 inches long.

Zhangping Shui Xian: The tea cake was roughly 1.5 × 1.5 inches in size, hydrated leaves are 2-2.5 inches long. This reminds me of Taiwanese high mountain oolong the most, particularly the strong orchid aroma and the sweetness, but it tastes less oxidized and does not have the grassy flavor often found in Taiwanese oolongs. There’s also flowery note I don’t quite know how to describe, it’s rice wine like to me.

Dahongpao: Toasty barley, liquor sweetness, light peanut. Hydrated leaves are 2-2.5 inches long. A little bit like Dong Ding oolong but not as oxidated and not nearly as smoky. This is the tea people think of when asked what an oolong tastes like.

Fenghuang Dancong: Very aromatic and perfume-like. The dry leaves smell like sugar cookies and the tea has a muscat wine quality to it. Sweet, very flowery, a bit fruity, a little bit of sandalwood, very light astringency. The hydrated leaves are from 1 inch to 3 inches long.

This set could be good for 1. learning the standards 2. gifting to Asian elders who are used to old school teas.
