Explore Four Styles Tieguanyin

Light Aroma Tieguanyin

Flavor: Fresh, vibrant, and floral, with lively sweetness and a crisp finish.

Craft:Light oxidation · Minimal roasting

The leaves are lightly oxidized and lightly processed to preserve their fresh green character, bright floral aroma, and natural sweetness.

Floral Aroma (Zheng Wei) Tieguanyin

Flavor: Gentle orchid fragrance, smooth body, and a richer taste that develops beautifully over multiple infusions.

Craft:Traditional timing · Moderate oxidation · Low roasting

The leaves are processed with a traditional “Zheng Wei” approach, allowing fuller flavor development while maintaining Tieguanyin’s elegant floral character.

Roasted Tieguanyin

Flavor: Warm roasted aroma, fuller body, layered sweetness, and a comforting finish.

Craft: Higher oxidation · Charcoal roasting

The leaves undergo deeper oxidation before being slowly roasted over charcoal, creating richer body, roasted aroma, and lasting sweetness.

2004 Aged Tieguanyin

Flavor: Rich aged fragrance with subtle woody notes, smooth texture, delicate plum-like acidity, and a lingering roasted aftertaste.

Craft: Long-term aging · Periodic re-roasting

The tea is carefully stored for years and repeatedly re-roasted over time, allowing complex aged aromas, smoother texture, and deeper flavors to develop.

Why Are There Different Styles of Tieguanyin

From traditional roasting to modern light styles and careful aging, each reflects a different stage in Tieguanyin's evolution.

  • The Modern Favorite

    Light Aroma Tieguanyin

Light Aroma (Qingxiang)Tieguanyin emerged in the late 20th century, influenced by Taiwan’s light-oxidation tea-making techniques. With its fresh aroma and bright flavor, it became a new modern style of Tieguanyin.

  • The Original Style

    Traditional Roasted Tieguanyin

Traditional Roasted Tieguanyin represents the original style of Tieguanyin and was once the dominant style in Anxi. To support long-term storage and long-distance transportation, tea makers developed a traditional process featuring fuller oxidation and charcoal roasting.

  • A Return to Balance

    Floral Aroma Tieguanyin (Zheng Wei)

Zheng Wei Tieguanyin developed during the rise of Light Aroma Tieguanyin as tea makers sought to return to a more traditional taste. It focuses on preserving Tieguanyin’s natural depth, richness, and signature “Guanyin Yun” character.

  • Time Creates Complexity

    Aged Tieguanyin

Aged Tieguanyin originated from Anxi’s traditional tea storage practice. Tea farmers preserved Tieguanyin over many years, allowing time to transform the tea into a deeper and more mellow style with unique aged aromas.

Over nearly 300 years, Tieguanyin has evolved from a traditional roasted oolong into a variety of styles shaped by changing craftsmanship and tea preferences.

Each style represents a different chapter in the journey of this legendary Anxi oolong.
