Why shouldn’t freshly roasted Oolong tea be consumed right away?

Minnan Narcissus is a famous historical tea. It is a kind of oolong tea. During Xianfeng period (1851-1861), Shibao Zhen and his son brought 100 tea tree saplings from Wuyishan and planted the saplings in Dingxianyan successfully. Then, combining Wuyishan tea-making techniques and their own experience, Shibao Zhen and his son developed Dingxianyan Narcissus. The new type of tea was widely known by oversea Chinese, especially Chinese in Southeast Asia. At the beginning of 20th century, Dingxianyan Narcissus was widely transplanted to Wutaishan, Yongchun and it got a name: Yongchun Narcissus. After 1949, Yongchun Narcissus was transplanted to more than 10 towns in Minnan and got a name: Minnan Narcissus. Minnan Narcissus is distinct from other tea by its unique aroma.

“Lao Cha Po” specifically refers to old leaves (not tender buds) harvested one week before and after Shuangjiang (one of China’s 24 solar terms, around October 23, marking the start of colder weather). These are mostly coarse leaves from the current year or 2–3-year-old growth. “Cha Po” is the Liubao people’s respectful name for old leaves. In the past, farmers sold tender buds as high-quality tea, while coarse old leaves were kept as everyday tea. The name reflects the farmers’ wisdom of “making full use of what you have.”

Around Shuangjiang, large temperature differences and reduced rainfall make the old leaves thicker and richer in sugars and nutrients, giving the tea a natural cane sugar sweetness. Tea harvested at this time has less astringency and a smoother, naturally sweet taste.

The raw material is sourced from high-quality dark raw tea produced in tea factories in Anhua and other counties.
In the past, the raw material was divided into two types: surface tea (higher quality) and inner tea (lower quality). During compression, the lower-quality tea was pressed inside, while the higher-quality tea was used on the surface. However, since the early 1970s, the labor-intensive and time-consuming traditional process was streamlined. The tea is now blended in the appropriate ratio of surface and inner tea and compressed in a single step.
